Orissa stands at the ninth position in terms of its total land area in India. Though hit by cyclones frequently, the land has not lost its charm. The place is swarmed with temples, forests and beaches that make Orissa look all the more beautiful.
Demographics
The population of Orissa stands at 36.7 million. The majority of the population lives in rural areas and only a meager of the whole population in the urban areas. About 84% of the population speaks Oriya, which is the official language of the state. The other languages that are used include Telegu, Hindi, Urdu and Bengali. English is spoken in cities only.
Geography
Puri, is the main tourist spot in Orissa. It is a holy place and hosts the annual festival of Lord Jagannath. The beaches here are the hot spot for all the tourists who gather there every day to make the most of their stay. Along the Western and Northern areas of Orissa, you would find the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Running aside the seacoast you will find the fertile alluvial plains and also the valleys of Brahmani, Mahanadi and Baitarani rivers. Its extensive unspoiled natural landscape protects the natural habitat that preserves with care the wildlife. The Simplipal Tiger reserve is a famous spot, which treasures some of the rarest species of animals. The Chilka Lake is something to boast about since it is the largest lake in India. It protects various rare species of birds and Olive Ridley turtles.
Climate
The state mainly represents the tropical monsoon climate. Summers are marked with simmering heat and the winter as pleasant as you can think. Besides, you will also find hints of refreshing Springs and reliving Autumn. The average rainfall marks 200 cm. The months between October and March are the ideal time to visit the state since the weather remains the most pleasant during this part of the year. It is also this special time of the year when migratory birds come to breed.
Flora and fauna
The state is home to 473 species of birds, 86 species of mammals, 19 species of amphibians and 110 species of reptiles. The most common animals include Wild Boar, Wild buffaloes, Caped langur, Sambar, Barking deer, Flying Squirrel, Porcupine, Crocodile and much more. The rare species of birds are also very fascinating.
Major Attractions
Orissa is dotted with a number of wildlife rich sites like Bhitar Kanika National Park and Chilika Wildlife Sanctuary. Both these places bind the most fascinating tales of the animal kingdom. The Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneshwar is a very famous temple adorned with beautiful sculptures. The Konark temple and the famous dance festival it hosts are full of colors and life. The Puri Jagannath Temple, the site of Kalinga war, the hill stations and Buddhist sites are all crowd pullers.
