Mizoram experienced 47,883 domestic and 785 foreign tourists in the last financial year. This marked a marginal increase compared to the years 2007-2008 that witnessed around 44,225 domestic tourists and 735 foreign tourists. This year also marked a rise in the revenue of the state amounting to INR 11 million compared to INR 8.6 million last year. This revenue was drawn from the government owned highway restaurants, picnic spots and the tourist lodges.

Mizoram possesses huge potential in village tourism and eco-tourism. If these two aspects are properly used it would positively influence the economy of the state to a great level. The Director of Tourism, Vaibeiha Hlychho stated that the Department of Tourism has been working on the tourism policy of Mizoram that would be submitted to the central government. He hopes that this policy is likely to attract more tourists to the state. The tourism policy would frame out the details of the information relating to the tourism potential of the state. It would also highlight the accurate information resulting out of the various researches and studies.

The Tourism Department has completed the tasks of identifying the destinations and the tourism circuits for development. The policy would also provide a detailed account of the existing plans, development plans for the next phase, promotional activities, tourism traffic, more tourism products and the other required tourism data.

The financial assistance from the Central Govt. to the tourism department of Mizoram has helped Mizoram to build and develop its own tourism infrastructure. Mizoram has marked four destinations and four tourism circuits for favoring the erection of infrastructure and other developments.

The properties and the tourism units operating as complete government enterprises till date is also scheduled to change in its operations. The adoption of the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model for such Government owned properties is on the cards too.

The department is looking forward to witness a phenomenal growth in tourist traffic in about two years as soon as the developmental tasks of the government are completed.
