Like its sister state Nagaland, Manipur too has a fair share of the memory of the World War II Anglo-Japanese combat. Moirang in Manipur was the first to see the hoisting of independent flag of India. Manipur is also the land of religious and cultural diversity. Though geographically secluded and miniature, this state is a precious jewel studded in rich heritage of India.
Demographics
With an estimated population of 23.88 lakhs, a large part of Manipur’s population, including the Kukis and Nagas occupy the hills. The non-tribal Meitis inhabit the valleys.
Geography
Located in India’s north-eastern frontier, Manipur has a total area of 22327 sq. kilometers and shares its boundaries with Nagaland, Mizoram, Assam and Myanmar. Capital Imphal lies in a captivating elliptical valley at 790 meters elevation, encircled by Blue Mountains. These mountains not only soothe the eyes but also the weather since they prevent both cold waves and cyclonic storms from disrupting the valley. Manipur is eroded by its two young river basins – the Barak River Basin (Barak Valley) and the Manipur River Basin.
Climate
Blocked by hills on all side, Manipur primarily has a monsoon climate. However, the quantity of rainfall varies from region to region. While Imphal receives an annual 933 mm, Tamenglong records 2593 mm. Since the rivers are corrosive, being in their upper course, the rains are the main aid for irrigation. However, during the severe cold month of January, Manipur also witnesses snowfall. The summers can get very hot and the mercury can soar to maximum in July. Tourists should aim the months between October to February for a tour in Manipur.
Flora and Fauna
For its major part, Manipur is a ‘green’ land. Tall grasses, reeds, teak, pine, oak and bamboos of various species are some of the flora prevalent in Manipur. However, this apart, the vegetation can be further sub-classified into Tropical Semi-ever Green, Dry Temperate Forest, Sub-Tropical Pine and Tropical Moist Deciduous varieties. These forests house 17 rare species of animals.
