In a reaffirmation of the desirability of Maldives as a holiday destination, Maldives received the runner-up position in the "Favourite Island" category of Condé Nast Traveller 12th Annual Readers’ Travel Awards. This award reaffirms the fact that Maldives is presently one of the best beach destinations in the world.
In the function held at The Royal Institute of Great Britain on Wednesday 2 September 2009, Maldives was presented with this award, after receiving an overall score of 95.04. Maldives lost to Sicily, the destination that won the Favourite Island of The Year award scoring overall marks of 95.70. Barbados came third, while Seychelles and Mauritius were ranked at 6th and 7th respectively.
In The World’s Top 100 list, Maldives Island came across in the 6th position. The destinations are assessed based on the condition of the beach, the kind and variety of accommodation and restaurants available, the environmental friendliness of the place, safety, value for money, people and so on.
Two resorts from Maldives also made it to the Best Overseas Leisure Hotels list. The resorts were "One&Only Reethi Rah" and "Soneva Gili by Six Senses".
