Demographics

The Census reads the total population figure at 96,752,247, marking it as the second most populous state in India. The state holds a special record in this regard, since it stands at the twelfth position in the world, for being the most populated country. Marathi is the state´s official language. Hinduism is the primary religion followed buy Islam. Here the Hindus comprise 80.2% of the population. Apart from this, the other religions include Christianity and Islam.

Geography

Maharashtra stretches from a central position to the western part of India. Encompassing an area of total 308,000 square kilometers, the state is fringed by the states of Chattisgarh to the East, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat to the North, Goa to the Southwest, Andhra Pradesh to the Southeast and Karnataka to the South. The whole region is divided into two Ghats – the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats. Many rivers originate from the Western Ghats of which the notable ones are the Godavari and Krishna.

Climate

Maharashtra is characterized by a Tropical Monsoon climate with adequate rainfall all throughout the year. Hence, you find the land covered with lush greenery. Summer sets in from March and lasts till the end of the rainy season. However the monsoon remains unpredictable very much. The ideal time to visit is between the months of November and February. During this time, the sky remains clear and gentle breeze sweeps the region in a pleasant mood.

Flora and fauna

Since Maharashtra receives rainfall for most part of the year, it is covered with thick Evergreen and Deciduous forests. The majority of plants and thick forest is found in the parts of eastern Sahyadri Regions of the state. Apart from this, the regions enjoy five national parks, three game reserves and many wildlife and bird sanctuaries.

Carry your camera with you and you will not regret the long hours spent at the famous locations. Maharashtra boasts about the various historical places that experiences tourist waves every year. The greatest attractions include Ajanta and Ellora, Aurangabad, the numerous forts and various religious places and hill stations. The beaches are also quite famous and they are stunning in regard to beauty. Some of the popular beaches are Juhu, Choupatty, Marve and many more. Mumbai, erstwhile Bombay is the capital and attracts tourists from all over the world.

- Appoint registered porter to carry your luggage at the Mumbai Railway Stations
- Pay according to the meter and taxi while you are in Mumbai, since there are chances of getting deceived if you do not follow the proper rules.
- Always carry your driving license with you with identification and photo.
