Madhuri Lake in Arunachal Pradesh creates Controversies
When Madhuri Dixit starrer Koyla’s shooting took place in a lesser-known beautiful lake known as ‘Shonga-Tser’ in Arunachal Pradesh, very few knew that the lake would be renamed Madhuri Lake in future. Located close to the Indo-China border in Tawang Valley of Arunachal Pradesh, the renaming of the lake was strongly resented by the Buddhist monks of the region.
The film was produced by TL Rajkumar, the former minister of Arunachal Pradesh. The exquisite beauty of the place was used as a location in the film and it created a lot of interest among tourists. As a result, the number of tourist footfalls increased within a short span of time. However, even the increase in the number of tourist could not stop the local resentment.
The lake actually got the tourist’s attention after one of the lensman posted a photograph on the Internet. Moreover, to counter the local resentment, Rimpoche, a former minister and local religious personality promised to take the initiative to restore the original name of the lake.
It ultimately resulted Rimpoche to become the Chairman of a committee related to local religious sentiments. According to Rimpoche, the name “Nga” meant five and “Tsar” meant grazing around in local language. The lake was previously a grazing field, which could be grazed by cattle after the cattle owner paid five coins to the landowner. However, a violent earthquake changed the fortune of the grazing field and it became a lake, surrounded by high hills. The protest was so much because all the history was imbibed in the name itself.
