Visit the Kaziranga National Park in Assam, India during the month of February and witness one of the most awe-inspiring festivals of India – the Elephant Festival. Rows after rows of these mammoth animals is indeed a sight to behold!
This annual festival is a venture by the Northeastern government that aims at conserving and protecting the exclusive species known as the Asiatic elephant. This joint venture by the Forest Department and Tourism Department of the Government of Assam, not only helps to create awareness about the Asiatic elephants but also contributes to promoting tourism in the country.
Due to increasing conflicts between humans and elephants and the ever lurking menace of poaching, there has been a significant reduction in the number of elephants in Assam and thus the species is fast approaching the number where they are in danger of being labeled as ‘Endangered Species’. Thus, the Elephant festival in Kaziranga ensures that something positive is done about the situation that is in hand.
The Asiatic elephant is the biggest land animal and the festival is extremely popular as it is one of the largest elephant festivals in India. Tourists from across the country come to witness this sight. The elephants in this festival are neatened and groomed to perfection. They then parade the entire ground, as a part of the celebration. Other games are also a part of this festival. This week long festival of pomp and color commences from 11th February and continues till 17th February every year.
