Delhi

Delhi is one of the most inhabited cities in the world and the most happening place in India. A federally administered Union Territory, it is the capital state of India. Delhi also holds its reputation for being the hub of political chores, since important offices and the parliament of India is located here.

Demographics

The 2004 census board read a population of 15,279,000 but every year the population leaps extraordinarily, thus making it one of the fastest growing cities in the world, population wise. 82% of the total population consists of the Hindus and the rest are Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and Jains. The other minority groups include Anglo-Indians, Parsis, Jews and Buddhists.

Geography

Delhi is located at 28.61° N 77.23° E surrounded by the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh on the East and Haryana to the North, South and West. The fertile alluvial soil comprises the major part of the land. The ridges make it the most beautiful feature of the Delhi landscape, which originates from the Aravalli range in the south, encircling the west and the other major parts of the city. An intimidating feature of Delhi is that it falls under the seismic zone IV, making it most susceptible to earthquakes.

Climate

Delhi experiences both extremes of temperature that is from 5 degree C to 47 degree C. The annual mean temperature is at 25 degree C. The rainfall remains at an average of approximately 714 mm. The heavy showers are mostly during the months of July and August. The monsoons visit Delhi from later June.

Flora and Fauna

Delhi is rich in gardens and parks. You would find a lot of greenery all around Delhi. Monkeys, bats, eaglets, reptiles and numerous insects inhabit the parks of Rashtrapati Bhavan and Allauddin Khilji tomb. Domesticated camels, elephants and horses are frequently seen walking leisurely on Delhi´s Highways. The outskirts of Delhi is dotted by golf courses, holiday resorts, parks and nature reserves. Seasonal flowers are found in plenty in the well-maintained gardens of Delhi.

Major Attractions

The numerous forts, temples, museums, markets and other major tourist attractions invite waves of tourists every year. In old Delhi, you will find a great number of striking forts and historic buildings, which are the ideal reminiscent of the Muslim rules in India. But New Delhi brings a comparatively new picture with the presence of embassies, government houses and other official buildings. The major attractions of old Delhi include Jantar Mantar observatory, Purana Quila or Old Fort, Jama Masjid, Lal Quila, Lodhi Garden, Qutub Minar and much more.

Other places that form the integral part of Delhi tour packages are Parliament house, Rashtrapati Bhavan, Appu Ghar, Akshardhham Temple, Lotus Temple and much more.

Tips

- Delhi has a great varying temperature changing in the day and the night. So, it is advisable to carry sufficient clothes that will comply with the temperature.
- Avail the cabs and rickshaws but never get into a cab without a fare meter
