Chief Minister of Sikkim introduces The Green Mission
The Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr. Pawan Chamling was content over the success of the State Green Mission. He hopes that the Mission will add a new color to the way of life, tradition, culture and religion for every inhabitant of Sikkim. The Chief Minister has sought the willingness of the people to frame and set off with the Green Mission program in Sikkim.
This program is a positive attempt that would be rewarding a better tomorrow to the State and to the world in the long run. The program aims to grow the habit of planting, creating and maintaining greenery among the people. It also aims to establish a responsibility for conveying the message of the State Green Mission by the residents to the future generations.
The MLA (member of legislative assembly) of the area, local Panchayats, Government Departments and others who have contributed financially, physically and socially to carry out the State Green Mission exercise was congratulated by the Chief Minister. It was further stated by the Chief Minister that the Green Mission is not confined to fixed financial years or project period but should be continued relentlessly by the people. The environmental protection and conservation of natural resource, environment, biodiversity, glaciers, lakes, wetlands, wildlife, medicinal plants and the cultural heritage and tradition of Sikkim are targeted to enhance the Green Coverage of the State through mass public participation and social awareness.
To impart success to the unique program of Green Mission the state government has set off to engage in plantation programs in all towns, villages, offices, public premises, school compounds, premises of Government offices of both State and Central governments, public sector undertakings, premises of the armed forces and paramilitary forces and private lands.
This has been done so that every single individual participates in this unique plantation program. The total population of Sikkim including that of the local people, migrant population and those in the Army and other paramilitary forces has been given a call by the government. The State Forest Department has been made the nodal agency for implementing the latest exercises successfully and it has been empowered to set up district-level task forces in all the four districts for this purpose.
The state government will embark upon extensive publicity drive to create awareness for the planting exercise. Area MLAs and Panchayat members will also conduct such exercises in their respective areas. The State Green Mission is an effective program in increasing the forest cover of the State to 46 per cent.
On introducing the Green Mission, the government of Sikkim has been successful in making the people of Sikkim environmentally conscious. It has also promoted a way of life and culture harmonized with nature.
