The month of August will witness opening of the first boutique luxury resort in Maldives. The resort will be located in Huvadhoo Atoll, one of the largest natural coral islands in the world and the deepest island in the Maldives. The central lagoon of the island plunge about 90 m. Alila Villas Hadahaa is the first resort on Gaafu Alifu (North Huvadhoo) Atoll in the southern side of the island. The opening of the hotel will also mark the first Maldives property to get the award of Green Globe certification
A 10-year old schoolgirl Zsuzsa Magyar from Notting Hill, London named the world’s first cultivated coral reefs in Maldives. She has named it Stingray Reef, which is known as Madi Faru in the local Dhivehi dialect. Little Zsuzsa’s name was chosen from 300 entries in a literature festival. The island is cultivated with a hope that implanting the nursery-grown corals into the 12-hectare reef will ultimately give shape to an island. On 5th and 8th June this year, which is World Environment Day and Earth Day respectively, Baa Atoll Hanifaru, Baa Atoll An’gafaru and Alif Dhaal Atoll Maamigili were declared as protected areas for whale sharks. These three Atolls in Maldives are densely populated areas of whale sharks. The Executive Director of Environment – NGO Bluepeace, Ali Rilwan said that whale shark sanctuaries are welcomed, and the need is more for monitoring and research.
